What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique to perform surgery. It involves using a camera and a series of small incisions to perform surgery. We use CO2 gas to fill the abdomen up to create space to perform the operation.

In many cases, this has replaced having to make large incision to perform surgery. Surgeries that can be performed laparoscopically include gallbladder removal, groin hernia repair, incision hernial repair. colon cancer and stomach cancer surgeries and many weight loss operations.

The benefits to the patient include decreased length of hospital stay, less post-operative pain, less scar tissue, return to normal activities sooner and a better cosmetic result. In some instances, emergency surgeries can be done this way such as removing your appendix. Dr. Kundhal would be happy to discuss if laparoscopic surgery is right for you for your upcoming surgery.
